E37 Stress is Good, Stop Clowning Around

Stress is Good

On the early Episode 4, Katrina Starzhynskaya, commented that many of the things that ail you may by just in your head. So own it.

Where you contribute this to mind over matter or the placebo effect. What you believe can affect how you feel.

Tony Robbins once shared a story of a man in one of his conferences who stood up to announce that he was blacking out. Tony replied well, "white it out." It caught the man off guard but it worked.

For many years now science and the media have been pushing the bad side effects of stress. I even review an article about stress last month.

However, the stress most often spoken of in health magazines is the stress brought on by your perception. It might also be that any situation that causes us to be active, take action, or change could cause stress. However, many believe that exercise, as it seems to be shown, can minimize the effects of this stress even thought you are putting your body under stress. And some still may view the act of exercise as stress situation too.

I have found that when we identify ourselves as feeling stresses when the proceed to tell ourselves that we are getting damaged which may further lead to more stress.

But if however, whether it is true or not, decide that stress may be good for you, would only possibly minimize any negative effects. In fact some adrenaline junkies enjoy stress and live possibly more rich if not exciting lives.

Obviously, I am not claiming that you can make the effects of stress good but I think you can make them worse.

Few of us can avoid stress without becoming complacent and uninspired dragging ourselves mundanely through the world. So what can be done.

Trick yourself, I've had to start doing it.

Whenever I have noticed that I am feeling stressed I tell myself: "Self Stress is Good." Not only do I find the stress easier to handle but it also gives myself permission of find joy in the journey and to turn stress into an exciting motivator instead of a complacency driver.

Stress is Good.

New Year's Clowns

As we get closer to the new year the played out New Years Resolution begin to rear its little funny head.

Unfortunately, New Years Resolutions are dead. However, end of the year reviews are in.

Why are New Years Resolutions dead?

New Years Resolutions are dead because they are pointless. Few do them and those that do, do not care what day of the year they start a new goal.

However, whether or not you need a date set on the calendar where you and your community have agreed to set goals, the end of the year is still a good time to take stock of what you have done, what you would like to do, but most important who you want to be.

Who you want to be starts with habits not resolutions. Habits do not start to form on a date. Habits start to form right now. As soon as you can identify a new habit or how to change a current habit to create the character and life you want to live. Then that's the time to do it. Or a least to engage in the steps necessary to "make action" and "take the habit."

Habits do not come willing. They must be taken, they must serve you and not turn you into the servant. This is what has happened for many of you who engage in fitness. The goal/habit becomes the end and not the means.

Habit should serve the goal and the goal should serve you.
So habits are like clown shoes. They are big and attention seeking, they signal functionality but only serve as another layer of absurdity, distracting you from the goal.

How to discover if you are clowning around.

Take a look at the habit you have formed or action you are taking. Ask yourself, does it or has it helped in achieving the goal? Has it helped you?

Example. A person had decided to snack on popcorn instead of other things to help them lose weight. This person should ask themselves first if they have lost weight. Second if any weight lose can be contributed to the popcorn eating.

If not then stop eating popcorn. It is not working. Or at least stop lying to yourself that it is helping you. Stop placing clown shoes in the way of real change and real results.

The reason you do this is beyond this podcast. You might need help.

Example 2. Monday is Chest day.

Now this is a little different. But its effect is the same. Many who start New Years Resolutions or the like to get fit start by setting a goal to exercise. This goal is insufficient. Now some might say it is not specific enough. I say even if you set a goal to workout 3 times a week making Monday chest day. I still say your are less effective.

What happens when you can not work out on Monday? Now this throws your workout/goals all out of whack. This now my be the excuse to stop working out or to not workout for the rest of the week or to just skip chest day.

Stop clowning around.

You've almost set goals that maybe even subconsciously you knew you would brake, which then might give you the permission to through in the towel. And now you can say "Well, at least I tried."

Boooo

A better goal would be: to be in the best shape of my life.

This goal does not break if you can not work chest on Monday. Now if your goal is to be in, or get in the best shape of your life, then set up a daily or weekly review of that goal. Set habits now that will bring you closer to that goal. As you review you will find better ways to get there.

For those of you who care about fitness and have fitness goals. Get a trainer/ coach. I you can not afford one try a book, follow a podcast, or get advice how ever you can. Chest day should hot be on a day of the week. Chest day should be a part of your workout routine. I break it down like this.

Round:
A round is the whole routine. Every exercise, every cardio-session, each muscle.

Session:
A session is the workout routine for a day/ gym session.

 Example: Chest workout
Exercise One: Incline bench- (x) Sets of (x) Reps, 1:2:3 Tempo, 10-15 sec rest
Exercise Two: Flat bench - ...
Exercise Three: Decline bench - ...

Exercise -
Whether it is an hour on a treadmill, stair stepper or squat.

Set -
A group of repetitions. (This should not be under three most of the time). "Full Sets" are commonly known as 10 reps

Reps -
 The movement of an exercise.

Tempo -
The speed of the different parts of the rep

Rest
 The time in between sets

Intensity level
How hard the exercise/rep is to perform.

E31 Are You Human?

Are you Human? A better question is: are you a mammal?

Remember mammals unlike birds have both fast twitch and slow twitch muscle meshed a woven in together. Mammals unlike your turkey dinner are mix of light and dark meat. You my friend are pink meat. But what does this mean for building muscle?

Muscle fuel

Fast twitch uses glycogen which come most easily from carbohydrates. Your slow twitch use myoglobin fueled best through protein.

This is why its is easier to build fast twitch muscles during a bulking phase where more carbohydrates are introduced into the many muscle building diets.

However slow twitch endurance muscles use more protein produced and used by the eukaryot alien living inside every cell you have. That's right mitochondria has its own DNA which is not human. But that's another story for another time.

These slow twitch muscles are great for strength training the low reps, high weight type of workout.

So now that I am bulking for the fall/winter I have started to replace some of my chicken salads with chicken and rice and a cooked veggie.

I am also doing low rep/ high weight workouts. This includes my favorite waves sets and and negatives. I try to get up a picture and maybe a uTube video in the show notes. And you're welcome to attach yours there as well.

The current height of my current wave set.

E19: John Hays (Fitness Inside & Out)

(MP3)

John Hays is a Health & Fitness Coach, Photographer, and WordPress Expert helping people look good in every way possible.

John Hays is a health & fitness coach utilizing products such as P90X, Insanity, T25 and other at home workout programs combined with daily dense nutrition with Shakeology and clean meal plans, along with mentoring people in focused daily support and accountability fitness challenge groups to help them see lasting impactful changes in their health & fitness. John is also a freelance photographer and web developer when desired projects come along.

In early 2006 John’s mother passed away from complications during surgery removing a sarcoma cancer tumor after having battled with it for 2 years. During that time John gained weight from stress, and ended up going to a gym every day, losing 45lbs in about 2 months. John hit a plateau, however, and his cousin Jimmy Hays Nelson told him about Beachbody and P90X, how muscle confusion broke through plateaus, and the amazing results he (Jimmy) had seen losing 100lbs, so John signed up as a coach to get P90X and save 25%. He started using P90X and immediately saw more toning, higher energy, and fell in love with all the Beachbody fitness programs.

In late 2008 John’s father passed away from sudden heart failure because of stress and not taking care of his fitness and nutrition. At that time John had been regularly using the Beachbody fitness programs and drinking Shakeology, the meal replacement health shake and feeling healthier every day. After his father’s death, John went to a cardiologist who performed multiple exams on his heart, ending in the diagnosis that as long as he continued doing what he was doing, he would beat his family’s genetics.

After a period of grieving, in February 2010 John decided to devote the rest of his life to helping get the word out to people that there are healthier options out there that can still include good, tasty food and fun activities. He became more active as a Team Beachbody Coach, and has been coaching people ever since.

In July 2011 John made a sudden decision to move to New York City to audition for the Hip Hop Abs Infomercial Test Group. He successfully made the test group and for the next 3 months he worked out with Shaun T live each morning, and was provided with focused nutrition each day. John lost 36lbs, 49% body fat and 5.5″ off his waist. It was an unbelievable experience that not only helped him get in the best shape of his life, but also helped him learn how to be an even better health & fitness coach. John can currently be seen in the Hip Hop Abs infomercial on television across the country.

John has seen amazing transformations in the people he has helped, and he believes his parents are proud of the mission he’s put himself on. He hopes you find insightful, inspiring information and tasty healthy recipes on his website, and that he is able to help make your life better in some way!

John has been a Team Beachbody Coach since April 2008, and is currently a Lifetime 3 Star Diamond Coach.

John was recognized in 2010 as one of Beachbody’s Top 10 most effective coaches utilizing social media to grow their business.

John was in the Hip Hop Abs Infomercial Test Group in 2011 losing 36lbs & 49% body fat, and is featured in the Hip Hop Abs Infomercial.

John was a December 2012 Beachbody $500 Transformation Winner.

John’s photography was selected for inclusion in the Schmap New York Guide Seventh Edition.

John is a A Real Change Certified WordPress Expert.

In a Bombshell

Andrea L. Cox is a beautiful 5ft 10in blonde bombshell! She is a natural health guru, who lives in San Diego California. With an impressive and ever expansive resume currently behind her, Andrea has successfully branded herself as an extraordinary and authoritative published author, business woman, model, health guru, and holistic healer, in the health, fitness, and beauty industries.

Andrea and her older sister sitting on what she refers to as “Satan’s” lap, aka, Ronald McDonald

Family

Andrea was born in a small town called Dayton, Ohio, Andrea is the youngest of three girls. Her father was an Ohio state trooper when Andrea was born and eventually started his own trucking company. Andrea’s mother worked for the local court house and took pride in raising three beautiful strong girls.

Miss Independent

Becoming independent at the age of 17, to pursue her dreams, Andrea left home. Her career began as a survival mechanism. Andrea began entering into bikini contests at the age of 20, and by the age of 22 she was spotted at the Atlanta, GA airport by a former National Geographic photographer who was shooting for Playboy and other men’s magazines. After being spotted by a glamour photographer, Andrea then began her career as a pin up and glamour model.

Glamour Tour

Andrea used a pseudo-name as she began modeling to ward off any potential “Unwanted” followers. Andrea’s first glamour photo shoot landed her on the cover of not one, but 5 magazines, including:
  •  the notoriously popular “Australian Pent House” Black and White edition series,
  • “Playboy’s Book of Lingerie” series, and
  • “Playboy’s Voluptuous Vixens” series.
Andrea has been in various magazine photo spreads, among a variety of powerful and well known men’s magazine. One of her favorite modeling jobs was shooting the billboards for “Red Bull Energy Drink”! She also shot their Pin-Up Posters. This goes completely against the grain of health that Andrea believes in today! Stimulants and diet drinks are a thing of the past for Andrea and her clients!

Andrea also was featured on “Cover Girls’ Magazine” and calendar, she became a spokes model for the Ashley Talent Agency in Cincinnati Ohio Moving over into a more expansive media exposure range, she also appeared in a segment of Passport to new homes and was the star of an Indiana State Lottery commercial.

Andrea’s work and photo-shoot profiles were featured on a personal modeling website AndreaLCox.com, where her work was showcased, and gained her notoriety with her online fans.

Muscles & More

Andrea grew deeply passionate about the health and fitness industry. With her modeling career demanding aN EXTREMLY conscientious health and body fitness awareness. Andrea became captivated by the fitness and health world, and thus began her career as a fitness model, at the age of 26, after spotting a fitness magazine in the check-out isle of her local grocery store. She looked up at her boyfriend at the time and said the following words “I’m going to be on the cover of this magazine!” Just two months later, she was!

With a strong passion for working out and the fitness lifestyle Andrea quickly realized that she wanted to begin creating a dynamic brand behind herself. Dropping her fake name, Andrea moved forward into the fitness model industry, where she became the “eye candy” to get the men to purchase the magazines. Soon after, magazine covers followed! Andrea has the largest spread for a female non-competitor in “Muscular Development Magazine” to date. She has shot for spreads and covers in over 20 fitness magazines to date.
During this same time, Andrea’s health began to fail, due her high protein diet, and on going battle with bulimia for almost two years, which had now, began to take its toll.

Health & Wellness

The sudden change in her health, forced Andrea to look at her nutritional lifestyle and health once again, wherein she discovered the life changing powers of juicing, fasting and raw living foods! Andrea began to soak up information about this lifestyle and immediately made the change.

During that same year, Andrea decided it was time to follow her newfound interest in raw living foods, Andrea flew herself out to New York, to meet the author of a popular raw foods book, only to learn that the author of the book was not responsible for the advice that had been given, but rather, that it was the author’s colon hydro therapist who had the “real” knowledge.

This was the event that changed Andrea’s life forever! Little did she know it at the time, it was to become the driving force that would motivate Andrea onto a more influential path, after realizing that she would have to directly nurture herself with living foods, juices and intermediate fasting. This was a change Andrea had to make for herself and could not rely on another person to do that for her.

Inspired by the mere thought that she could change her health on a cellular level and Andrea underwent an intense self-induced journey into healing her body, healthily, and naturally.

A Raw Beginning

Andrea began a 40 day juice fast to detoxify her body, followed by a seven day water fast, she quickly realized the health benefits of raw foods and juicing, and began to immerse herself into the Raw Vegan lifestyle and world. Her raw journey had just began!
Following her new found path, she attended the California Academy of Healing Arts, where she studied holistic healing and was certified in reflexology. Andrea followed this by working closely under a Shaman, for a year to learn more about detoxification both through body and spirit.

Andrea soon realized that both men and women suffered from eating disorders that often had a mental component to them. Andrea began concentrating her efforts on spreading her experience and knowledge, and became a powerful raw vegan and health guru.

Creating her first website, at the age of 29, www.TheHealthyHaven.net is an active health and lifestyle website, designed to help teach, and inform the public about healthy ways to maintain and improve their life and lifestyle by using food as medicine! Andrea is a firm believer in the mind body connection and has become deeply spiritual since finding the Lord a few years ago.

The Juice is loose

Andrea has created and authored two books. The first “Raw-lic-ous Recipes”, is a semi auto-biography and self-help health advice book which details her trials and tribulations of living with bulimia, describing how she healed it by ‘juicing’, eating only living foods and cleansing her body through fasting.

Her second book, titled “Juicing for Beauty”, is a collection of her favorite juice, smoothie and soup recipes, designed to help any health conscious individual eat more healthily and easily, with less time wasted in the kitchen.

Andrea also created a line of ‘humic and fulvic acid’ detoxification products called “Andrea’s Breakfast”
